We are Sisters of the Infant Jesus (SJI) which was started as a Diocesan Congregation in 1950 by The Right Reverend Bishop Alois Haene (1910-1999) of the Bethlehem Mission Society (SMB) - Bishop of the then Victoria Province now the Gweru Diocese in Zimbabwe. The SJI Sisterhood is composed of Catholic African Religious women and had their profession of the first sisters in 1952. The Congregation has now a total number of more than 250 professed sisters who are engaged in various apostolic work of the Church. Currently, the congregation is of the Diocesan Right but however, in the last General Chapter that was held in 2001, one of the major recommendations was to take concrete steps towards becoming Pontifical Right. The present General Council is pursuing the mandate.
The Generalate of the Institute is located in Gweru City, serving the outreach of more than 61 communities of sisters within four Dioceses and they are: Masvingo and Gweru in Zimbabwe, Chimoio in Mozambique, and Wheeling-Charleston (West Virginia) in the United States of America.
